Copyediting includes:

  • language editing (grammar, syntax, usage, and diction)

  • content editing (querying internal inconsistencies or discrepancies and problems in structure or organization)

  • ensuring consistency of style (spelling, punctuation, hyphenation, capitalization, treatment of quotations, etc.)

  • correlating the various parts of the manuscript (cross-references, footnotes, charts, illustrations, table of contents, etc.)

Substantive editing (also called content editing or line editing) involves making significant changes to a manuscript, such as rewriting and reorganizing the text.

Writing coaching goes beyond editing. In addition to working on your manuscript, I'll explain to you the reasons for my revisions and train you to develop your self-editing skills and improve your own writing.

Indexing - A well-written index significantly enhances the usefulness of a nonfiction book by enabling readers to locate information efficiently—far better than even the most detailed table of contents. I have indexed books published by University of South Carolina Press, University Press of Mississippi, Oak Knoll Press and the University of Pittsburgh Press, and Carroll & Graf, including biography, bibliography, memoir, college course transcription, documentary reference volumes, interviews, and encyclopedia.
